E - Euthanasia

The nasty E word. Euthanasia. The hardest decision a Pet Parent will ever have to make. Ideally, most people I speak to would prefer their pet to ‘go on their own terms’, to die peacefully in their sleep. Sadly this rarely happens. Having to make a choice for our pet often brings up feelings of guilt. Am I doing the right thing? Wikipedia’s definition: Euthanasia (from Greek: εὐθανασία; "good death": εὖ, eu; "well" or "good" – θάνατος, thanatos; "death") is the practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering. So When is the right time? I will go more into depth later on, but I recommend using the Quality of Life scale. You can also record on a calendar or diary if your pet is having more bad days than good. What if I make the appointment and she is doing better? It’s ok to cancel! The vet staff are not going to get angry at you. You know your pet better than anyone. However, the vet team are animal advocates, so we do need to listen to their advice. The vet may give an idea of time (days, weeks) in which a decision needs to be made. Please know we have your pet’s best interest at heart. The Vet may step in if they feel it is cruel to keep your pet alive due to their pain. Can I have a home visit? Most certainly. After being thought the heartache many times, I personally prefer a home euthanasia to one in a clinic. (Sorry to all my colleagues, nothing personal!) The pet is much calmer in their home environment, and if you plan accordingly, the whole family can be involved without the whispers and stares of others in a clinic waiting room. You can spend all the time you need after the procedure and a crematorium may even be able to collect your pet from your home. It is such an emotional and hard topic to talk about, so if you do have any questions, I am more than happy to reply to you privately if you wish. 😥🌈🐾
