Grief Myth - Don't Be Sad

January 14, 2019

What a stupid thing to say to a grieving person!

I have just lost the love of my life! I have every RIGHT to be sad, angry, upset, devastated.

Letting the sadness out through tears, anger, and other emotions is normal and healthy. It is better to express how you are feeling then to bottle it up inside.

Other Unhelpful phrases you may have heard:

"Don't be sad, they are in a better place/they had a good life”

"Don't feel Bad... it was "JUST A" ... (don't get me started!!)

"He was old, and sick, you can get another one"  - oh sure... my Dad just died, I will go to the Dad store and choose another!!

These statement create rage in my blood! "Just A" needs to be struck from the human language! It is of no use to anyone! It only causes hurt and pain and It minimises the loving relationship you had with your pet.

Your heart is broken. Do not let anyone tell you how you should be feeling, what you should be doing, or how long it should take to feel “better”.

You may have good days, and then you may have triggers that start the tears again... this is normal. Rather than avoiding the triggers all together, take note of what they are... a thought, a song lyric, a piece of hair on your clothes. Acknowledge it, write it down, and know that it may happen again.

Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss. And being sad is allowed here xxx
